Letter : Charleston, [S.C.] to Samuel and William Vernon, 1771 Jan. 11.

Russell informs these Newport (R.I.) merchants that a fire in Charleston (S.C.) destroyed stores in which "Capt. Tanner's molasses and pimento was stored." He expects that Captain Tanner will set sail by the 18th with a cargo of lumber, rice, and pork. A postscript lists prices current for molasses, rice, rum, and other goods.

Samuel Vernon (1683-1737) and his wife, Elizabeth Fleet, lived in Newport, Rhode Island, where he held many public offices. Their eight children included Samuel (1711-1792), Thomas (1718-1784), and William (1719-1806). Thomas, a merchant and royal postmaster, was a Loyalist during the American Revolution.
